Director of the Chinese EQUATOR Centre

Professor Zhaoxiang Bian

Professor Zhaoxiang Bian, Director of the Chinese EQUATOR CentreDr Bian obtained his Bachelor Degree of Chinese Medicine from the Nanjiang University of Chinese Medicine in 1988, Master Degree of Chinese Medicine from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine in 1991, and PhD degree in Integrative Chinese and Western Medicine from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in 1994.  Currently, he is Chair Professor in the School of Chinese Medicine and Tsang Shiu Tim Endowed Professor of Chinese Medicine Clinical Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and also serves as associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development) of HKBU, Director of Clinical Division, School of Chinese Medicine, Director of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinical Study Centre and Director of Chinese EQUATOR Centre. Dr Bian’s major research interests are: (1) Clinical research methodology and reporting guidelines; (2) Clinical and translational study of gastrointestinal diseases; (3) Chinese medicine wisdom-driven new drug discovery and development. His academic achievements include 400+ academic publications, 80+ US & China patents, and one new drug clinical trial licence from China National Medical Product Administration.

Research Staff

Dr Linda Li-Dan Zhong

Dr Linda Li-Dan Zhong, Research Staff memberDr Zhong obtained her Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and MD at Shanghai University of TCM. She obtained her PhD degree at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses mainly on Chinese Medicine clinical trials and drug discovery for digestive diseases, gynaecological disorders and autoimmune diseases. She joined the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a post-doctoral research fellow and Assistant Professor. She is also a Visiting Professor at the Integrative Medicine Centre, the University of Toronto; Senior Visiting Fellow at the Australian Research Centre for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, the University of Technology Sydney; Visiting Scholar at UCLA and Harvard Medical School. She serves as the Vice President of the Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine, and a Council Member of the Digestive Diseases Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine. She has published more than 70 SCI papers in high impact journals, edited ten academic books and acted as a principal investigator of eight clinical research projects and as a co-investigators of more than 20 clinical research projects.

Dr Zhong is responsible for 1) clinical trial design and implementation; 2) standardization of Chinese medicine, and 3) the arrangement of some Centre activities.

Dr Xuan Zhang, Research Assistant Professor

Dr Xuan Zhang, Research Staff memberDr Zhang graduated from Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine with a bachelor’s degree and obtained her Master’s and PhD degrees in Chinese Medicine at the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Dr Zhang joined the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a post-doctoral research fellow. Her research mainly focuses on reporting guidelines, clinical trials of gastroenterology, and the basic theory research of Chinese medicine. Dr Zhang is a Chinese Medicine Practitioner registered in both China Mainland and Hong Kong. She has acted as principal investigator for three research grants and was the main researcher of five research projects of Chinese medicine. Dr Zhang has published more than 60 articles in medical journals and edited two academic books. She has received several academic awards and honours, such as the 1st Qiu Zhen Scholars of Chinese Medicine in 2020, TOP ARTICLES IN OUTSTANDING S&T JOURNALS OF CHINA, FRONTRUNNER 5000 (as the first author) in 2014 and 2017, respectively; and the Third Prize of Science and Technology Award, China Association of Chinese Medicine in 2015; etc.

Dr Zhang is responsible for 1) the establishment of “Good Publication Practice Network in Chinese Medicine”; 2) the development of a multicentre reporting guideline; 3) the preparation of the Centre Website; and 4) the coordination of some Centre activities.

Dr Yuting Duan, Post-doctoral research fellow

Dr Yuting Duan, Research Staff memberDr Duan obtained her PhD degree from the Guangdong University of Chinese Medicine and joined clinical division, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a post-doctoral research fellow in 2019. Her research interests include 1) Evidence-based Chinese medicine; 2) Systematic reviews; 3) Development of reporting guidelines, and 4) Clinical trial design and implementation. Dr Duan has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has translated 11 CONSORT extensions into Chinese as the main author, 4 of which have been published in the Chinese Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine. She has been conducting a reporting quality survey of clinical trials in China and complementing the evidence from China to the world.

Dr Duan is responsible for 1) the translation works of the EQUATOR Network and the CONSORT guidelines; 2) the development of reporting guidelines of the CORE for TCM and STROBE for TCM, and 3) assisting in the preparation of the Chinese EQUATOR Centre Publication School and some relevant activities of the Centre.

Ran Tian, Senior Research Assistant

Ms Ran Tian, Research Staff memberMs. Tian obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Tianjin Univerisity of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Master’s degree from the Hong Kong Baptist University. She joined clinical division, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a research assistant in 2016. Ms Tian is interested in the research of reporting guidelines of Chinese medicine, and evidence-based Chinese medicine and systematic reviews. She has published over 20 relevant articles in Chinese and international journals. For example, she has participated in the development of SPIRIT-CHM and the PRISMA Extension for Moxibustion. She has also translated the CONSORT extension for herbal medicine into Chinese as the first author.

Ms Tian is responsible for 1) helping with the translation work of the CONSORT guidelines; 2) conducting the quality assessments of clinical trials of Chinese medicine, and 3) assisting with relevant research activities of the Centre.

Ya Zheng, Senior Research Assistant

Ms Ya Zheng, Research Staff memberMs. Zheng obtained her Bachelor’s degree from the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Master’s degree from the Hong Kong Baptist University. She joined clinical division, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a senior research assistant in 2018. Ms Zheng is also a Chinese Medicine Practitioner registered in both China Mainland and Hong Kong. She is participating in a clinical trial as the main researcher.

Ms Zheng is responsible for 1) conducting clinical trials on Chinese medicine; 2) assisting in the establishment of a clinical trial database.

Sen Chow, Senior Research Assistant

Ms Sen Chow, Research Staff memberMs. Chow graduated from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine and obtained her Master’s degree from Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. She joined clinical division, School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University as a research assistant in 2020. Ms Chow is a registered Chinese medicine practitioner of Hong Kong. She is interested in clinical research of Chinese medicine and has participated in China provincial-level and school-level research projects. She has also participated in publishing 4 academic papers.

Ms Chow is responsible for 1) helping with patient recruitment and trial implementation; and 2) assisting with relevant research activities such as interview, data entry and analysis.

Lingyun Zhao, Research Assistant

Ms Lingyun Zhao, Research Staff memberMs. Zhao graduated from Macau University of Science and Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese Medicine and a master’s degree in Chinese Medicine from Hong Kong Baptist University. She joined the Centre as a research assistant in 2020. She is qualified in evidence-based Chinese Medicine and systematic reviews, and is very interested in the development of reporting guidelines.

Ms Zhao is responsible for 1) helping with the translation of reporting guidelines that do not have a Chinese version; 2) conducting the literature screening and quality assessments for published clinical trials, and 3) assisting in the preparation of relevant documents for the Centre activities.

Jingyuan Luo, Research Assistant

Mr Jingyuan Luo, Research Staff memberMr LUO obtained his Bachelor’ double degrees, Chinese medicine and science of biomedicine (Honours) from the School of Chinese Medicine of Hong Kong Baptist University in 2020 with first honour. He is a Chinese Medicine Practitioner registered in Hong Kong. He joined the Centre as a research assistant. His research mainly focuses on clinical research of gastroenterology and Chinese medicine. He has received the gold award in an international biomolecular design competition at the University of California San Francisco, USA, in 2018.

Mr LUO is responsible for 1) the conduct of clinical trials; 2) the recruitment of patients; and 3) the preparation of relevant documents for the clinical trials.

Yiulin Wong, PhD student

Ms Yiulin Wong, Research Staff memberMs Wong obtained her Bachelor’ degree in Chinese medicine at Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong. Starting from 2020, she is a PhD student in the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University. Her research interests include 1) the theory of Chinese Medicine Nine Body Constitutions; 2) translation of reporting guidelines, and 3) clinical research on Chinese medicine.

Ms Wong is responsible for 1) conducting the clinical trial of the Nine Body Constitution among elderly people in Hong Kong, and 2) assisting with some translations of the CONSORT extensions.
