USA EQUATOR Centre
The USA EQUATOR Centre is based at the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) at Stanford University.
Launched in April 2014 with a founding grant from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, the Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) is a research to action center focused on transforming research practices to improve the quality of scientific studies in biomedicine and beyond. METRICS fosters multi-disciplinary research collaborations to help produce solutions that increase the effectiveness and value of scientific investigation. By serving as a lens that both focuses and helps magnify the impact of scholars, policymakers and others working on meta-research issues, we hope to enhance the public discourse and advance the development of policies and practices that maximize the use of best research practices.
The key focus of the USA EQUATOR Centre
- Build the meta-research field and catalyze solutions-focused research to develop best scientific practices
- Provide leaders with the skills and knowledge needed to support the development and implementation of high-quality research
- Transform research practices to strengthen the evidence base for informed decision-making

Professor John P.A. Ioannidis
John P.A. Ioannidis, MD, DSc, is Professor of Medicine, of Epidemiology and Population Health, and (by courtesy) of Biomedical Data Science and Co-Director, Meta-Research Innovation Center at Stanford (METRICS) at Stanford University. He has served as President of the Association of American Physicians and has won many awards, including the European Award for Excellence in Clinical Science, Medal for Distinguished Service, Teachers College, Columbia U, Chanchlani Global Health Award, Epiphany Science Courage Award, Einstein fellow, Gordon award, Albert Stuyvenberg Medal, Harwood Prize, Blake Award, Founders’ Medal for MAER-Net). He has been inducted in Association of American Physicians, European Academy of Cancer Sciences, American Epidemiological Society, European Academy of Sciences and Arts, US National Academy of Medicine and Accademia delle Scienze (Bologna) and has received honorary doctorates from Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Athens, University of Tilburg, University of Edinburgh, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and McMaster University.
John has been involved in the conception, development and publication of many reporting guidelines and has led research on diverse meta-research areas, providing evidence for research practices, biases, and solutions for improving research efficiency in biomedicine and beyond. He has also been a co-director of the International Congress on Peer Review and Scientific Publication that is co-organized by METRICS, BMJ, and JAMA.
METRICS affiliates
As an interdisciplinary, solutions focused center, METRICS has recruited a large number of Stanford faculty from multiple disciplines within and outside biomedicine. Our researchers, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, and students add additional depth and breadth to METRICS research activities and initiatives.
METRICS Affiliates are recognized leaders in the field of meta-research who are studying research practices in the areas of methods, evaluation, reporting, reproducibility and incentives with the goal of generating evidence to strengthen the research enterprise. We are grateful to have a large number of affiliates from leading research institutions from around the world.
METRICS partners with a broad range of organizations working to improve best research practices through engagement on specific initiatives, targeted research, the sharing of best practices, and participation in working groups.
A list of METRICS affiliates, postdoctoral fellows, and other researchers involved in METRICS can be found in the METRICS website: https://metrics.stanford.edu/ along with additional information about our work, collaborations, and events.
Funding
Work at METRICS has been funded by federal grants in the USA, unrestricted gifts to Stanford University, grants from non-profit foundations, as well as the Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Department of Medicine. We do not accept any funding from for-profit entities.
